Hap

IF but some vengeful god would call to me
From up the sky, and laugh: Thou suffering thing,
Know that thy sorrow is my ecstasy,
That thy love's loss is my hate's profiting!

Then would I bear, and clench myself, and die,
Steeled by the sense of ire unmerited;
Half-eased, too, that a Powerfuller than I
Had willed and meted me the tears I shed.

But not so. How arrives it joy lies slain,
And why unblooms the best hope ever sown
--Crass Casualty obstructs the sun and rain,
And dicing Time for gladness casts a moan....
These purblind Doomsters had as readily strown
Blisses about my pilgrimage as pain.

2.해석

어떤 복수심에 불타는 신이 하늘에서
나에게 <너 고통받는 자여, 너의 슬픔은
나의 큰 기쁨, 너의 사랑의 상실은
나의 미움의 이득임을 알지라>라고 외치면서 껄껄대고 웃는다면,

나는 그것을 꾹 참고서, 이를 악물고 죽을 것이다.
부당한 노여움을 샀구나 하는 생각에 몸이 굳어져,
나보다 <강력한 어떤 자>의 뜻으로 내가 흘리는 눈물이
나에게 벌로 주어졌구나 하고 반쯤 안심이 되어.

그러나 그렇지는 않다. 어떻게 오든 기쁨은 살해된다.
그리고 일찍이 씨 뿌려진 최선의 희망이 왜 꽃피지 못하고 시드는가
-- <우둔한 우연>이 해를 가리고 비를 막고,
